Foreigners can not only rent Austrian real estate without any problems; foreigners are also allowed to buy real estate (freehold) in Austria (and e.g. rent it out). Especially the purchase of the first residential property is possible without much effort. Foreigners may also inherit, give away and sell Austrian real estate.

Real estate is cheap compared to other European cities of comparable size. Austria does not levy any wealth, inheritance or gift tax. Operating costs are usually less than EUR 3 per square metre. Only at the time of purchase is there a land transfer tax (3.5%) and a registration fee (1.1%).
